Unless you happen to be in the minority of people who are artists or art curators (or are in great terms with someone who is one), choosing art might not come naturally to you. Art options are endless, with a wide range that goes from abstract motifs to still photography and beyond. So, how does one go about picking the right art pieces for the home?

Here are our tried and true tips for choosing art. Try them out when buying for your current collection or to start a new one. If you need an extra hand, you can always book an appointment with us and we'll offer complimentary guidance with your purchase!

TIP 1: THEMES ARE NOT MANDATORY

Picking a theme for your wall art is helpful. Say you're a fan of vintage cars. You could hang one style of car in the living room, and another in the dining room. Or if you have a love for nature, here are three different pieces you could add to your collection. Take a look at this apartment we staged on 1080 Amsterdam. Our client requested timeless furnishings with a retro modern feel. We took him up on his inspiration, and incorporated wall art featuring retro pop culture icons, like The Beatles and James Bond in one room, and Marilyn Monroe in another.

But if you don't want to stick to one theme, you can make everything work by sticking to one same color scheme. Check out this apartment we furnished on 20 Pine Street. The warm browns of the art work we featured in the living room are carried on into the bedroom. While both pieces are completely different, the brown ties everything together and provides cohesion.

Black and white photography can help you achieve this same effect. For example, you could hang this timeless photo of the Brooklyn Bridge in your living room, this soft mom and baby elephant in a nursery and this feminine portrait in another bedroom. All photos feature drastically different themes to reflect different feelings in every room, yet they all work together because of their color.

TIP 2: ADD A LITTLE FENG SHUI

There's an ancient popular saying that reads "What you think, is what you will attract". Feng shui follows this same principle for decorating. What you bring into your home, will dictate the overall vibes of your place. In general, we recommend avoiding art pieces with violent and aggressive images, mostly in the bedroom. The bedroom is a place for relaxation and love, and wall art can help you add a touch of sensuality, warmth and even protection.

Leave bolder and more energetic pieces for home offices or entertainment spaces. Places like the living room can pull off almost any type of wall art, so bring pieces that best reflect your style. You can go from dramatic and feminine, to zen or traditional and classic.

TIP 3: FOLLOW NO RULES - CHOOSE WITH YOUR HEART

While there are great rules to follow on how to pick the best paint color for your home, how to pick out furnishings for a small space and more, there really are no rules for choosing art. "MY home, MY art" is a mantra you might as well follow when bringing new pieces into your home.

As long as what you choose to hang truly reflects your personality and the vibe you want to give that room, you can't really make a mistake in this field. From abstract to classic, anything goes! Just remember like we mentioned before, color is a major consideration when picking. Always trust your instincts when you're drawn to a particular color or theme. Art should always tell a story about you.

Now when it comes to hanging that art, that is a whole other story. Contact us and we'll help you out!
