Opposites do attract. And the timeless pairing of black and white is one of the best examples of how two colors, while perfectly useful on their own, can become more powerful when paired together. So how do you take this Ying and Yang, and bring them into your home? Here are our best Do's and Don'ts, inspired by real homes LUMEN has worked on.

DO: BRING IN AN ACCENT COLOR

When paired in their crispest purest version, the high contrast between black and white can prove tiring for the eye. That's why you need to provide small visual breaks for the eyes by bringing in additional colors. The key is subtlety. Brown isn't the first color you'd think of pairing with black and white, however it works handsomely when brought in via wood or wood veneers. The yellow undertones in the wood remind the eye of soft natural sunlight, which will instantly add a touch of warmth to your room.

You can also go bold with this idea, and add brighter color accents in blue, pink, yellow or any color you like! The abundance of white keeps the pop of color from looking tacky against the black. Take a look at the bedroom we did at The Brompton. The soft teal accents look elegant and modern against the crisp white background. While the black lamp and chair add the perfect grounding touch.

DON'T: BE AFRAID OF BLACK

There's an interior design rule that says that every room can use a touch of black. However, black can be an intimidating color. If you don't know where to start, we recommend bringing in black accessories, light fixtures or photographs. Black and white pictures are not only classic, but they blend in perfectly with any color wall or furnishing.

DO: GO GLOSSY

People tend to shy away from black because it pulls the light in, instead of bouncing it off to the rest of the room like white does. There's a reason white is the most popular wall color for small apartments. However, high gloss lacquer finishes cancel the light trapping effect of black.

Glossy black lacquers can go as far as mimicking the effect of a mirror in a room.

In the living room, spring for a black gloss coffee table or lamp. In the bedroom, go for glossy black dressers and chests. These are not the most essential piece in any room, but they are substantial enough to make a statement.

DON'T: FORGET ABOUT GREYSCALE

Don't think crisp white and black are the only way to go. Soft ivory will make the perfect background for black and white photographs, giving the space enough warmth to serve as contrast. On the other hand, an off grey hue will add cool sophistication to any room. Dark charcoal rugs will look modern and handle wear and dirt like the best of them.

In any place you'd like to add a touch of black but are hesitant, grey will very likely make a great compromise. Plus, both off white and grey shades are much easier to upkeep.
