When most people think "bachelor pad", what usually comes to mind are leather recliners, a giant entertainment center and maybe a bar. But that isn't all a bachelor pad can be. It you (or a guy you know) are at a loss about what really makes a great contemporary bachelor pad, we want to help. So here are our top 5 tips to live your best single life at home, and click over to our Gallery for more inspiration

TIP 1: GO MINIMALIST

Aside from the usual furniture pieces you'll need in every room, try keeping additional items to a minimum. However, that doesn't mean you shouldn't decorate. Stick to oversized furnishings such as mirrors, wall art and rugs. This will not only make every space uncluttered and more relaxing, but they will also be easier to maintain. Why? Less cleaning.

TIP 2: INVEST IN HANDSOME STORAGE

You'll obviously want to invest in a great sofa and a TV, but storage essentials might not come to mind at first. We recommend investing in at least one handsome dresser or chest, and one shelf. The dresser can at first help you out in the living room, providing storage for your entertainment and work essentials. When you graduate to another home, you can move it into the bedroom. Take into account that you'll open and close this piece a million times - you need it to last.

TIP 3: MAKE ROOM FOR A HOME OFFICE

Working from home or taking work with you after hours has become such a reality, that you'd better create a space you'll enjoy. Don't get a generic desk. As with the storage options, a desk is one piece that might be often overlooked, yet is extremely handy. Invest in a minimalist desk with its own set of storage, like this one with built in bookshelves, or this one with a set of drawers. And don't forget about getting a sleek and comfy chair, which can double as extra seating when entertaining.

TIP 4: DON'T HIDE YOUR TV

Really, why should you hide your TV? High quality shows have made a TV more than just a way to pass the time. So instead of hiding your device, make it a part of your setting. Nicer furnishings like a modern TV base, lamps and shelves will keep your living room from looking like a college media center. Watch out for high gloss lacquers, warm woods and stainless steel finishes. Plus, technology keeps on getting thinner and sleeker anyway, making everything blend in easily.

TIP 5: SAY NO TO FLUORESCENT LIGHTING

Most new apartments feature standard fluorescent lighting. Nothing says "college dorm" more than not switching out these fixtures. Instead, look for simple and budget friendly options like this, this and this one. Always make sure you have at least 3 different light sources per room: central, low and indirect. Table and floor lamps will work wonders for creating ambience when you're having company over.
